Yasmeen Bakhatan, PhD

Yasmeen's curiosity about neuroscience began when she realized how little we can do once infections or inflammation reach the brain. During her graduate studies, Yasmeen saw how chemical design could change a drug’s behavior and decided to focus on developing compounds that can cross the blood brain barrier. What started as a chemical challenge became a deeper scientific and personal mission to understand how we can protect and heal the brain through smarter drug design. She is drawn to research that connects chemistry, biology, and medicine to create meaningful treatments for neurological and infectious brain diseases.
In the lab, Yasmeen works on the design and development of brain-penetrating antibiotic systems aimed at treating resistant and polymicrobial brain infections. Her current project focuses on the synthesis of hybrid antibiotic.
